National Conference Explores Quantum Biotechnology for Healthcare

Mumbai, India: Researchers, clinicians, industry representatives, startups and students gathered at the National Conference on Quantum Biotechnology in Mumbai to discuss applications of quantum science in diagnostics, biomedical imaging, drug discovery and precision medicine.

The one-day conference was hosted by QMet Tech Foundation at the PC Saxena Auditorium on the IIT Bombay campus. QMet Tech serves as the thematic hub for Quantum Sensing and Metrology under India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM), with support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Delivering the keynote address, DST Secretary Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare highlighted the strategic importance of quantum biotechnology and its potential to connect developments in quantum science with life sciences.

The conference focused on quantum sensing, imaging and computing and their application to biological and healthcare challenges. Organisers positioned the meeting as an interdisciplinary forum to identify research priorities and strengthen the transition of quantum technologies from laboratory demonstrations towards healthcare applications.

IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare stressed the importance of an integrated approach to technology development. Prof. Kasturi Saha, Project Director at QMet Tech Foundation, highlighted the potential of highly precise quantum sensors for biosensing and the need to bring physicists, biologists and industry together to advance applications.

QMet Tech Foundation CEO Hardik Joshi pointed to growing industry interest in quantum biotechnology and the need to develop startups, skilled talent, manufacturing capabilities and testing infrastructure as the technology moves closer to clinical applications.

The programme featured three sessions covering quantum applications in biology and the academic landscape, the transition of quantum biosensors from laboratory research to industry, and emerging applications in biosensing. A panel discussion examined opportunities, challenges and the future direction of quantum biotechnology in India.

Participants included officials and researchers from DST and the Department of Biotechnology, along with faculty members from IIT Bombay and representatives of QMet Tech Foundation.

The conference brought quantum sensing, imaging, computing and biotechnology together under a common platform, reflecting the National Quantum Mission’s focus on developing an application-oriented quantum ecosystem in India.
