Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for a generic hormone therapy patch used to treat menopause symptoms and help prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The approval also makes the product eligible for a potential 180-day period of competitive generic therapy (CGT) exclusivity, subject to US regulatory requirements.
Announced on October 21, 2026, the approval covers Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System at a strength of 0.045 mg/0.015 mg per day. The product is a generic equivalent of Climara Pro Transdermal System.
The USFDA has classified the application under its Competitive Generic Therapy pathway, which is intended to support the development of generic medicines with limited competition. Eligibility for 180-day exclusivity is subject to applicable provisions of the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Any qualifying exclusivity period would begin when the product is first commercially marketed.
Manufacturing Planned at Gujarat Facility
Zydus said the approved transdermal system will be manufactured at its Moraiya facility near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The product is intended for women experiencing moderate to severe menopausal symptoms and is also used to prevent osteoporosis after menopause.
According to IQVIA data for the 12 months ending August 2026, the product recorded annual sales of approximately US$45.7 million in the United States. The market figure provides an indication of the commercial opportunity associated with the approval.Approval Expands Zydus’ US Generic Drug Portfolio
The latest clearance brings Zydus Lifesciences’ total number of USFDA approvals to 458. As of September 30, 2026, the company had submitted 516 Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) to the US regulator.
The approval adds another product to the company’s US generics portfolio, with the potential exclusivity period offering a further commercial consideration. However, the timing and applicability of the 180-day period will depend on the relevant regulatory conditions and the product’s first commercial marketing.
The announcement marks a further step in Zydus’ efforts to expand its presence in the US pharmaceutical market, where demand for generic alternatives remains an important part of the industry’s competitive landscape.
