Delhi: India and Indonesia have expanded their bilateral partnership with the announcement of 20 outcomes during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia. The package includes 14 agreements and six major initiatives spanning defence, space, healthcare, agriculture, digital technology, education, disaster management and industrial cooperation, reflecting a broader push to strengthen collaboration across strategic sectors.
The outcomes of the high-level visit underline both countries’ intention to broaden cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic engagement and accelerate partnerships in emerging technologies, manufacturing, connectivity and regional development.
Among the key agreements is the extension of the framework for cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. The two countries also signed memorandums covering medical products regulation, agriculture and allied sectors, minerals and steel supply chains, telecommunications, research and innovation, and disaster management.
Defence and strategic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. The announced outcomes include cooperation on the BrahMos missile system, an Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement, and an extension of the maritime safety and security cooperation framework. The Election Commission of India and Indonesia’s General Elections Commission also signed an agreement to strengthen institutional collaboration.
Industrial and technology partnerships received significant attention. India and Indonesia agreed to establish a strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel to develop a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia. Another agreement brings together the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Ltd. and PT PERMINAS to collaborate on rare earth magnet development.
The visit also resulted in several developmental and cultural initiatives. India announced assistance for the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, while Indonesia will deploy a liaison officer to the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR).
Other announcements include India’s supply of 100 tonnes of DWR 162 wheat seeds to Indonesia, the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION) based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) architecture, the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management Bangalore branch campus at Singhasari SEZ, and a joint commemoration of the “Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy.”
The broad set of agreements highlights a growing India-Indonesia partnership focused on strategic cooperation, industrial development, innovation, education and regional connectivity.
