Honeywell to Supply Process Technology for Hengyi’s Brunei Petrochemical Expansion

Honeywell will supply process technology and engineering services for Hengyi’s Brunei expansion, designed to raise annual crude-processing capacity to 20 million tonnes.

Honeywell Technologies will provide process technology, engineering services and specialised equipment for the second phase of Hengyi Industries’ Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) refinery and petrochemical project in Brunei. The expansion is expected to raise the facility’s annual crude-processing capacity to approximately 20 million metric tonnes once completed

Announced on October 14, 2026, the agreement covers technology licensing, catalysts, technical support and proprietary equipment intended to support the production of higher-value petrochemical products. The planned expansion includes hydrocracking, an aromatics complex and dehydrogenation units, which Honeywell said are expected to rank among the largest facilities of their respective kinds.

The project will use several Honeywell UOP technologies, including CCR Platforming, Unicracking, Unionfining, Butamer and C4 Oleflex. It will also incorporate an aromatics complex based on the company’s light-desorbent Parex technology.

These systems are intended to help Hengyi process feedstocks more efficiently and broaden its output beyond conventional refining products. The arrangement also covers engineering and operational support to help the facility improve reliability during start-up and ongoing production.

The companies have already worked together on the first phase of the PMB project. Honeywell supplied process technologies, engineering design, key equipment, catalysts and adsorbents, along with operator training and technical services for commissioning and continuing operations.

Hengyi Industries Chief Executive Officer Chen Liancai said the earlier collaboration had supported the integration of the company’s refining and petrochemical operations. He added that further cooperation could contribute to the development of Brunei’s energy and downstream industries.

For Brunei, the expansion forms part of efforts to derive greater value from domestic oil and gas resources by developing downstream processing capacity. The project is also expected to support the country’s petrochemical sector and its role in regional industrial activity.

Honeywell Technologies UOP President Rajesh Gattupalli said the technologies would support operational efficiency and reliability while enabling Hengyi to expand into higher-value petrochemicals.

The second phase builds on the existing PMB complex, extending the companies’ relationship from the original project into a larger set of refining and petrochemical operations. The announcement did not specify a completion date for the expansion.
