New Delhi, India: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Norway-based Hystar AS to enable phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects in India.
The agreement between BHEL and Hystar is aimed at strengthening India’s domestic capabilities in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser technology, which is used to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis.
The agreement was signed by senior representatives from both organisations in New Delhi. Y. Srinivas Rao, Executive Director, Heavy Power Equipment Plant, Hyderabad, and Sutripto De, General Manager and Head, New & Renewable Energy Business, represented BHEL, while Hystar CEO Fredrik Mowill signed on behalf of the Norwegian company. The signing took place in the presence of representatives from the Royal Norwegian Embassy and senior BHEL officials.
The collaboration complements BHEL’s existing partnership with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited for alkaline electrolyser systems. With the addition of Hystar’s PEM technology, BHEL said it is strengthening its ability to offer both alkaline and PEM electrolyser solutions for India’s emerging green hydrogen market.
The partnership is also expected to enhance BHEL’s project execution capabilities for green hydrogen projects in India. The phased localisation of PEM electrolyser systems is aligned with the broader push towards domestic manufacturing and technology development in the clean energy sector.
BHEL has decades of experience across power, transmission, renewable energy, oil and gas, transportation, defence and aerospace. The company is leveraging this engineering, manufacturing and project execution expertise to expand into emerging clean energy technologies, including green hydrogen.
The strategic tie-up is expected to support India’s efforts to develop a stronger domestic green hydrogen ecosystem while reducing dependence on imported electrolyser technologies. It also aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Government of India’s Make in India initiative.
With both alkaline and PEM electrolyser technologies now forming part of its collaboration portfolio, BHEL is positioning itself to participate more extensively in India’s developing green hydrogen infrastructure and clean energy manufacturing ecosystem.
