Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi has launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Portal of India, a new digital platform aimed at strengthening transparency, traceability and regulatory oversight in the country’s emerging green hydrogen sector.
The portal was unveiled during a national workshop on “Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission: Through State Policies, Hubs & Infrastructure,” organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The platform has been developed to facilitate transparent certification and regulatory compliance under the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India.
Addressing the workshop, Shri Pralhad Joshi said momentum behind the National Green Hydrogen Mission is growing across states. According to the minister, six states have already notified dedicated green hydrogen policies, while seven others have integrated hydrogen-related provisions into existing industrial and renewable energy frameworks. Four additional states are currently developing dedicated policies.
The minister highlighted progress in domestic manufacturing, noting that financial incentives have been awarded to 15 companies to establish indigenous electrolyser manufacturing capacity of 3,000 MW annually. In the refinery sector, contracts have been awarded for the supply of 30,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen to IOCL, BPCL, HPCL and NRL, while 84 crore has been sanctioned for pilot projects supporting hydrogen use in the steel industry.
Joshi also outlined developments in green mobility, stating that nearly 208 crore has been allocated to support 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and nine refuelling stations. An additional investment of 193.35 crore has been approved across seven pilot projects and testing facilities.
On research and innovation, the minister said a dedicated R&D roadmap worth 113 crore is supporting 21 approved projects. He added that regulatory frameworks have been strengthened through the launch of the certification scheme and the finalisation of standards for green ammonia and green methanol.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission targets the creation of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030, supported by 125 GW of dedicated renewable energy capacity. The programme is expected to attract investments exceeding 8 lakh crore, generate over 6 lakh jobs and help reduce annual carbon emissions by 50 million tonnes.
The minister also announced that the Green Hydrogen Mission has allocated 100 crore to support startups in hydrogen technologies, with the first list of nine startups approved for funding totaling 22 crore.
