Mumbai, India: Tata Steel Ludhiana has become the first steel producer in India to receive a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licence for manufacturing octagonal billets under IS 14650:2023, marking a development in the production of steel inputs used for TMT reinforcement bars.
The BIS certification covers octagonal billets manufactured at Tata Steel’s Ludhiana facility. These billets are used to produce Tata Tiscon TMT rebars, which are supplied for applications including residential and commercial construction, roads, bridges, metros, airports, industrial projects and the power sector.
Unlike conventional square and rectangular billets, the octagonal design provides a larger surface area. According to Tata Steel, this enables better heat transfer and more uniform cooling during processing. The geometry also supports improved material flow during rolling, contributing to greater consistency in the dimensions of the finished rebars.
The company said the design can also improve the internal grain flow and structure of the steel, supporting properties such as strength, toughness and ductility. More uniform deformation during rolling is expected to improve roundness and dimensional accuracy in the final products.
Another reported advantage is higher metal yield. The octagonal profile reduces losses at billet corners, while more uniform rolling forces can lower wear on rolling mill equipment. Tata Steel said improved material utilisation and energy efficiency associated with the design support its efforts towards a greener steelmaking process.
Subodh Pandey, Vice President, Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene at Tata Steel, said the BIS licence validates the manufacturing capabilities developed at the Ludhiana facility and reflects the company’s focus on differentiated steel products and technological development.
The certification establishes Tata Steel Ludhiana as the first Indian steel producer to receive BIS certification specifically for octagonal billet production under the stated standard. The company said the certified billets will serve a broad range of construction, infrastructure and industrial applications.
