New Delhi: ndia’s Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is strengthening the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform, two digital initiatives designed to formalise businesses, widen access to government support and bring informal enterprises into the mainstream economy. Together, the platforms are making it easier for millions of small businesses to secure official recognition and participate in formal economic activity.
The Udyam Registration Portal offers MSMEs a paperless, self-declaration-based online registration process at no cost. Once registered, enterprises receive a unique Udyam Registration Number and an electronic certificate, establishing their formal identity and making them eligible for a range of government programmes.
Complementing this initiative, the Udyam Assist Platform focuses on informal micro enterprises that may not have GST registration or fall under the Income Tax framework. By working with authorised partners such as banks, NBFCs and other lending institutions, the platform enables these businesses to obtain Udyam Assist Certificates based on verified information, helping them become part of India’s formal MSME ecosystem.
The government believes the twin initiatives are improving financial inclusion by helping smaller enterprises gain access to institutional credit and various MSME development schemes. Registered businesses can also benefit from support for technology upgradation, quality certification, skill development, market promotion and entrepreneurship programmes.
Formal registration also offers protection against delayed payments. MSMEs can use the Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Portal to address payment disputes through a digital process covering claim filing, conciliation, arbitration and final resolution. In addition, registered enterprises become eligible to participate in government procurement opportunities and domestic as well as international trade exhibitions organised under various MSME programmes.
The initiatives have placed a strong focus on inclusion by making government support more accessible to women entrepreneurs, SC/ST business owners, rural enterprises, traditional artisans, first-generation entrepreneurs and youth-led startups.
According to the Ministry, more than 8.9 crore enterprises have now been registered through the Udyam Registration Portal and the Udyam Assist Platform. These enterprises collectively provide employment to over 38 crore people across the country.
As India continues to promote entrepreneurship as a driver of economic growth, the two digital platforms are expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding the formal MSME base while improving access to finance, government schemes and business opportunities.
