Kharkhoda, Haryana: Maruti Suzuki India has inaugurated its advanced vehicle manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda in Haryana, marking a major expansion of its production network. Opened during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi through video conferencing, the facility is expected to strengthen the company’s manufacturing capacity while reinforcing industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Maruti Suzuki India has formally inaugurated its new vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda in Haryana, a project the company describes as a key milestone in its long-term manufacturing expansion plans.
The inauguration took place during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi jointly dedicated the facility through video conferencing. Senior officials from Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Suzuki India were also present at the event.
Spread across nearly 800 acres, the Kharkhoda plant currently has an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles. Maruti Suzuki plans to double that capacity to one million units annually through a total investment of ₹35,000 crore. Once fully developed, the company expects the facility to rank among the world’s largest automobile manufacturing plants while generating more than 21,000 employment opportunities, including jobs within its supplier ecosystem.
The new manufacturing unit has been built around Suzuki’s Smart Factory concept, integrating digital technologies and Industry 5.0 practices aimed at improving operational efficiency, product quality and workplace safety. The facility also incorporates collaborative robots designed to support human-machine interaction on the production floor.
Sustainability has been embedded into the plant’s design. According to the company, the facility will meet its electricity requirements entirely through renewable energy, combining on-site solar generation with green power procurement. Plans are also in place to expand installed solar capacity, alongside the addition of a biogas plant and battery energy storage system. Water recycling measures, rainwater harvesting and a zero liquid discharge system have also been incorporated into the manufacturing complex.
Maruti Suzuki said the Kharkhoda project aligns with its broader production strategy as it works toward an annual manufacturing capacity of four million vehicles. The company also highlighted ongoing community development initiatives in nearby villages and skill development programmes through its Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing to support workforce creation around the new facility.
