Bengaluru, India: A new Cognizant study has found that most Indian enterprises lack a consolidated view of their technology spending, making it harder to measure business outcomes, optimise investments and improve financial decision-making as IT budgets continue to grow.

Indian enterprises are increasing investments in technology, but only a small percentage have complete visibility into where their IT budgets are being spent, according to a new report released by Cognizant. The study found that just 12% of organisations have a fully consolidated, enterprise-wide view of IT expenditure, highlighting a significant gap in financial oversight and technology governance.

The report, titled “Smarter IT Spend: From Cost Control to Cost Intelligence,” identifies fragmented data as one of the biggest challenges facing organisations. Around 63% of respondents said IT spending information remains scattered across multiple systems and tools, limiting their ability to make informed investment decisions and accurately assess business value generated from technology initiatives.

According to the findings, many organisations continue to manage technology costs through disconnected financial processes rather than adopting integrated, enterprise-wide visibility. This fragmented approach often makes it difficult to align IT investments with strategic business priorities and respond quickly to changing operational needs.

The report also points to growing expectations from business leaders for finance and technology teams to work more closely together. Instead of focusing solely on reducing expenditure, enterprises are increasingly looking for better ways to understand how technology investments contribute to productivity, innovation and long-term business performance.

Cognizant noted that improving visibility into IT spending requires organisations to move beyond traditional cost-tracking practices and adopt data-driven approaches that provide real-time insights into technology investments. A unified view of spending can help enterprises improve budgeting accuracy, optimise resource allocation and strengthen decision-making across departments.

The findings suggest that as digital transformation accelerates across industries, organisations with stronger financial visibility into technology investments may be better positioned to maximise returns, improve operational efficiency and support future innovation. While IT spending continues to rise, the report indicates that many Indian enterprises still have considerable work ahead in building integrated cost intelligence capabilities that connect technology expenditure with measurable business outcomes.
