Jio Platforms Enters WIPO Global Top 20 After Record Patent Surge

Jio Platforms, the digital and technology arm of Reliance Industries, has broken into the top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings for 2025, highlighting the company’s growing focus on research-led innovation and intellectual property development.

The latest WIPO rankings place Jio Platforms at 20th position globally after it advanced 320 places compared with the previous year. The achievement makes it the only Indian technology company to feature in the elite list of leading global patent applicants. The rankings are based on published international patent applications filed through the PCT framework.

With the latest ranking, Jio joins a group of global technology companies that includes Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft. The rise comes during a period when overall global PCT filings recorded less than one per cent growth, underscoring the scale of Jio’s increase in patent activity.

The company’s patent portfolio is concentrated on next-generation digital technologies. Key areas include 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.

According to company data, Jio Platforms had filed a cumulative 6,817 patents as of March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 were filed in India and 4,424 across international jurisdictions. The company has secured 1,009 patent grants globally, including 538 in India and 471 overseas.

The ranking reflects the increasing role of intellectual property creation within India’s technology ecosystem and signals a broader shift toward the development of indigenous digital technologies. For Jio Platforms, the recognition strengthens its position among global innovators as it continues expanding its portfolio across advanced telecommunications, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure technologies.
