AI-Powered Agri-Startups Poised to Transform India's Farm Economy

Delhi, India: India’s agriculture sector is on the cusp of a major technology-led transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI), space technologies and agri-startups expected to play a central role in improving productivity, sustainability and farmer incomes, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said at the 17th Agriculture Leadership Conclave 2026.

Addressing the conclave in New Delhi, Dr. Jitendra Singh said India has witnessed remarkable growth in agricultural innovation over the past decade, driven by supportive government policies, expanding startup ecosystems and increasing adoption of emerging technologies. He noted that AI-based solutions, satellite applications and precision farming tools are reshaping traditional farming practices and creating new opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

The Minister emphasized that the future of Indian agriculture extends beyond food production, describing it as a sector capable of driving entrepreneurship, employment generation and rural economic growth. He urged stakeholders to embrace innovation-led farming models that combine scientific research with practical field applications.

Highlighting the country’s growing startup ecosystem, Dr. Singh said India is now home to more than 1.57 lakh startups, including over 350 agri-tech startups. He noted that the biotechnology sector has also expanded significantly, contributing innovative solutions for agriculture, healthcare and industrial development.

The Minister stressed that Artificial Intelligence should be deployed to help farmers improve crop planning, enhance productivity, manage natural resources efficiently and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges. He also pointed to the increasing role of space technologies in supporting weather forecasting, crop monitoring and precision agriculture.

Referring to India’s bioeconomy, Dr. Singh said its value has expanded from approximately USD 10 billion in 2014 to nearly USD 170 billion, with continued investment expected to accelerate innovation across sectors, including agriculture.

Dr. Singh also highlighted the government’s support for research institutions, innovation centres and startup incubation programmes that encourage collaboration between scientists, entrepreneurs and industry. He said such partnerships are essential for translating scientific discoveries into practical technologies that directly benefit farmers.

Calling for sustained collaboration among policymakers, researchers, industry leaders and entrepreneurs, the Minister said India’s agricultural future will depend on integrating innovation, technology and market-driven solutions. He added that empowering farmers with modern tools and knowledge would strengthen the country’s agricultural economy while supporting long-term, sustainable growth.
