Indian founders who grew up in the country are linked to about $560 billion in founder-share-attributed value across current and former unicorns built overseas, according to a new Indian Diaspora Index released by Prosus and Dealroom.
The index examined 205 overseas unicorns with at least one founder who grew up in India. Of these, 70 companies, valued at a combined $243 billion on the founder-share basis, were established by teams made up entirely of Indian founders. The group includes founders associated with companies such as Zscaler, Rubrik, Nutanix and Skild.
A further 135 unicorns have Indian-origin founders as part of their core founding teams. Companies in this group include Palo Alto, Bloom Energy, Astera Labs and Perplexity. Together, these businesses account for another $317 billion under the index’s founder-share methodology.
The report uses a specific measure of company value. Each company is divided into equal founder portions, with only the shares attributed to qualifying founders included in the calculation. The $560 billion figure therefore does not represent the total valuation of the companies or the personal wealth of their founders.
The index also highlights the strong concentration of Indian-origin entrepreneurship in the United States. In the narrower overseas cohort, 187 of the 205 companies, or 91%, are based in the US.
A separate, broader analysis based on founders’ birth origins covers 323 companies and includes people who left India as children as well as companies headquartered in India. It found that 62% of those companies are based in the United States, with 200 having either started there or relocated there.
For comparison, the report puts the founder-share-attributed value of 102 unicorns based in India at about $349 billion. Flipkart, Zomato and Groww are among the largest companies in that group, with respective values of $36 billion, $30 billion and $16 billion under the methodology.
The findings underline the scale of Indian-origin entrepreneurship across markets, while also showing the prominent role of the US in the overseas ecosystem tracked by the index.
