JSW Group has entered India’s electric commercial vehicle market with the launch of AMPSTAR, a new brand under JSW Greentech Limited that will develop and manufacture electric buses and trucks. The vehicles will be produced at the group’s greenfield facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The company said AMPSTAR will cover electric commercial vehicles along with charging infrastructure, operating solutions, financing and after-sales support. Customers will have powertrain options ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW, while ownership models will include outright purchases, leasing and Battery as a Service.
Production will be based at JSW’s 90-acre integrated EV manufacturing facility in the AURIC industrial area. The plant has an annual capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks. It will include a pre-treatment and electro-deposition process for bus manufacturing, an automated truck-cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem.
JSW Greentech said the vehicles have been developed specifically for Indian operating conditions. The company has developed the electric drivetrain’s base logic, software and algorithms in-house, allowing the vehicles to be configured for different customer requirements.
The vehicle architecture includes a double-cooling battery system and a high-strength monocoque chassis designed for Indian road and climate conditions.
On the bus side, AMPSTAR’s planned portfolio will range from 7-metre to 18-metre models. These vehicles are intended for applications including staff transportation, city services, intercity travel and school mobility.
For the truck segment, the company will initially introduce a 55-tonne tractor-trailer. JSW Greentech said it plans to expand the range to include tippers and fixed-body dumpers in the coming months.
JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said the company’s entry into electric commercial mobility is linked to reducing dependence on imported fuel and developing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
JSW Greentech CEO Sumit Mittal said the company is developing the vehicles in India, including their drivetrain and software, with the range intended to address different commercial transport requirements.
