Emerson Updates Turbomachinery Monitoring Systems for Safer Operations

Emerson updates AMS 6500 ATG and AMS Machine Works with continuous data streaming, analytics and dashboards for turbomachinery monitoring

Emerson has updated its AMS 6500 ATG turbomachinery protection system and AMS Machine Works asset health monitoring software, introducing continuous data streaming and expanded analytics for critical machinery operations.

The updates, announced on September 8, are focused particularly on machinery startups and shutdowns, which can extend over hours or days and require longer periods of operational data for effective analysis.

The latest AMS 6500 ATG version 5.0 and AMS Machine Works version 2.4 allow machine data to be transmitted continuously from the protection system to the analytics platform. Emerson said this removes earlier limitations on data collection periods and gives analysts access to information that can be used for longer-term trending.

The additional data can help operators and maintenance teams track changes in machinery performance during complex operating conditions. AMS Machine Works can combine streamed information from the AMS 6500 ATG with data from other sources, while trends can be associated directly with alarms. Live machine information is also available to operators through the system.

The AMS 6500 ATG has also received a web-based programmable dashboard intended to provide a consolidated view of turbomachinery performance. Users can configure up to five dashboard pages, with each page supporting as many as 25 widgets. Available displays include trends, Boolean alarm values and live measurement fields.

Another addition allows dashboard widgets to represent machine components alongside their associated data points. This is intended to help users relate individual measurements to specific equipment and assess asset conditions from a single interface.

Emerson Vice President and General Manager of Reliability Solutions Ben Swisher said continuous data transmission gives operators, maintenance personnel and analysts more information for understanding machinery behaviour and monitoring long-term asset health.

The software updates also introduce Modbus-independent connectivity, which Emerson said is intended to simplify system management. The company has continued to incorporate cybersecurity improvements alongside the new monitoring and analytics capabilities.
