New Delhi, India: The Central Government has approved two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) in Tamil Nadu with a combined project cost of ₹1,012.02 crore, reinforcing the state’s position as a major electronics manufacturing hub while expanding semiconductor talent development and industrial infrastructure.
The Government of India has approved the establishment of two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs) in Tamil Nadu at Manallur and Pillapaikkam, with a combined investment of ₹1,012.02 crore. The projects are intended to strengthen the state’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem and support India’s expanding domestic electronics value chain.
The Manallur EMC will be developed over 474.3 acres with a project cost of ₹587.47 crore, while the Pillapaikkam EMC will span 379.3 acres with an investment of ₹424.55 crore. Together, the clusters are expected to provide modern industrial infrastructure for electronics manufacturers and component suppliers.
The government highlighted the rapid growth of India’s electronics sector over the past decade. Electronics production has increased from approximately ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26, while exports have risen from around ₹38,000 crore to ₹4.24 lakh crore during the same period. Mobile phone production has grown from nearly ₹18,000 crore to ₹6.27 lakh crore, with exports reaching ₹2.59 lakh crore. India now manufactures 99.2% of the mobile phones sold domestically, and the industry is estimated to support nearly 25 lakh jobs.
Tamil Nadu continues to play a key role in this growth, with electronics manufacturing facilities spread across multiple districts. The state currently has 38 plants in Kancheepuram, 6 each in Chennai and Tiruvallur, 8 in Krishnagiri, 4 in Chengalpattu, 2 in Thoothukudi, and one each in Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Vellore.
The government also noted progress under the Semicon India Programme, stating that 315 institutes across the country have been supported for semiconductor talent development, including 61 institutes in Tamil Nadu. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s skilled workforce and support the country’s growing semiconductor and electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
