Global policy experts have endorsed India’s strategy of preserving “strategic autonomy” while managing relations with both Washington and Beijing as US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping get ready for an important bilateral encounter.

Although maintaining total neutrality may become challenging, experts at the Centre for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) stated that India’s diplomatic approach is still viable in an increasingly unstable global order. They pointed out that while maintaining closer connections with Western countries, India has taken a more accommodative approach toward China.

Reinhard Bóikofer, a former member of the European Parliament, stated that while strategic autonomy is possible, “neutrality is certainly a fantasy” given the ongoing escalation of geopolitical tensions over problems like Taiwan, supply chains, and vital minerals.

Experts also emphasized India’s increasing significance as a balancing force in attempts to diversify trade, industry, and technology globally. They cited the recently concluded negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the European Union as evidence of India’s growing importance on the world stage.

According to commentators, India is still a crucial strategic and economic partner in the changing multipolar international order despite shifting Western political objectives.
