New Delhi, India: ndia has crossed the 300 GW mark in installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The milestone puts the country more than halfway toward its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Solar power accounts for the largest share of India’s non-fossil capacity at 164.59 GW, followed by wind power at 58.14 GW. Hydropower, including large and small projects, contributes 57.24 GW, while bio-power accounts for 11.75 GW. Nuclear power adds another 8.78 GW to the country’s non-fossil electricity capacity.

Together, these sources represent more than 54% of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity, which stood at around 552 GW at the time of the announcement.

The latest figures reflect the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity over the past decade. Solar capacity has grown from around 2.8 GW in 2014 to nearly 165 GW, while wind capacity has increased from about 21 GW to more than 58 GW during the same period.

India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity during 2025-26. Solar installations accounted for 44.6 GW of that addition, while wind contributed another 6 GW.

The increase in generation capacity has also been accompanied by higher renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation rose from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26, according to the ministry.

The government has also been expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities for clean-energy equipment. Capacity listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for solar photovoltaic modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the clean-energy transition is also linked to energy independence and industrial development. Alongside renewable power expansion, the government is pursuing the National Green Hydrogen Mission as part of its efforts to develop green hydrogen and related industries.
