IIT Gandhinagar and the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence research, education, innovation and talent development.
The partnership aims to build a stronger ecosystem for advanced AI research while creating opportunities for joint academic and research initiatives between the two organisations. The agreement was signed on July 29, 2026.
Under the MoU, IIT Gandhinagar and IAIRO will collaborate on research projects, jointly pursue research grants and explore opportunities to develop AI infrastructure through external funding. The two organisations will also work together on short-term courses, certificate programmes, conferences, seminars, workshops and other academic activities focused on artificial intelligence.
The agreement also creates opportunities for academic exchange. IIT Gandhinagar faculty members and researchers will be able to deliver lectures and training programmes for IAIRO scientists and engineers, while IAIRO experts can participate in teaching, mentoring and research activities at IIT Gandhinagar.
The partnership will further support joint supervision of doctoral students, research internships and adjunct appointments, along with shared access to research infrastructure and computational facilities, subject to institutional policies.
IIT Gandhinagar Director Prof Rajat Moona said the collaboration brings together complementary strengths in research, talent development and innovation. He also highlighted the potential of AI applications across sectors such as healthcare, life sciences and drug discovery.
Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean of Research & Development at IIT Gandhinagar, said the partnership would bring together research expertise, infrastructure and talent to support advanced AI education, innovation and technologies aligned with national priorities.
Dr Amit Sheth, Founding Director and CEO of IAIRO, described the agreement as an opportunity to operationalise the complementary strengths of the two organisations. He linked the partnership to the development of the Gujarat AI Valley, with a focus on talent, deep-tech AI companies and investment.
The MoU also provides for joint conferences, science exhibitions, workshops and outreach programmes. Through shared research facilities and academic resources, the organisations intend to promote knowledge exchange and establish a framework for longer-term cooperation in AI research, education, innovation and capacity building.
The partnership brings together IIT Gandhinagar’s academic and research capabilities with IAIRO’s focus on AI research and innovation, creating additional opportunities for students, researchers and AI professionals to participate in collaborative projects and knowledge-development initiatives.
