India is participating in the 5th World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Meeting on the Development of the International Herbal Pharmacopoeia, where experts from member countries are discussing global standards for herbal medicines.
The Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H), under the Ministry of Ayush, is representing India at the 5th WHO Expert Meeting on the Development of the International Herbal Pharmacopoeia, being held in Hong Kong SAR, China, from June 16 to 18, 2026.
The international gathering brings together specialists from WHO member states to deliberate on the development of harmonised standards for herbal medicines and related regulatory frameworks. The meeting is focused on strengthening quality, safety and purity benchmarks for herbal products used across different healthcare systems.
Representing India as an expert member is Dr. Raman Mohan Singh, Director, PCIM&H. Supporting the engagement is a technical team comprising Dr. Jayanthy A, PSO (Phg.), Dr. Vijay Gupta, PSO (Ay.), Dr. Anupam Maurya, SO (Chem.), Dr. Vijayakumar, SO (Siddha) and Dr. Nikhil Jirankalgikar, SO (Ay.), who are participating virtually.
During the meeting, herbal monographs and related scientific documents prepared by PCIM&H in consultation with WHO experts are being presented for review and consideration. These documents form part of ongoing efforts to establish internationally recognised reference standards for herbal medicines.
The participation is expected to contribute to broader discussions on aligning traditional medicine standards with internationally accepted quality requirements. Officials noted that the exercise supports efforts to harmonise standards for Indian systems of medicine with global pharmacopoeial frameworks while maintaining scientific rigor and consistency.
India’s involvement in the development of the International Herbal Pharmacopoeia reflects the country’s continuing engagement in global discussions on traditional and herbal medicine. The initiative is also aimed at strengthening evidence-based approaches to healthcare and promoting wider acceptance of quality-assured herbal products in international markets.
