Hitachi Energy India will invest about ₹2,000 crore to build a large power transformer manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, as the company expands production capacity to meet rising demand for electricity infrastructure in India and overseas.
Hitachi Energy India has announced plans to establish a new Large Power Transformer (LPT) manufacturing facility in Karjan, near Vadodara, with an investment of approximately ₹2,000 crore. The project, unveiled on June 12, marks one of the company’s largest manufacturing expansions in the country and follows the investment plan disclosed during its FY26 fourth-quarter results.
The new plant is expected to strengthen the company’s transformer production network in India, complementing its existing facilities in Gujarat as well as transformer insulation and component manufacturing units in Mysore and Halol.
The expansion comes at a time when India’s electricity transmission network is set for significant growth. According to the Central Electricity Authority, the country will require investments of about ₹7.93 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure to integrate more than 900 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2035. Growing demand from grid expansion, industrial electrification and data centres is also increasing the need for large power transformers.
Construction of the new factory is scheduled for completion during FY28. Once operational, it will manufacture large power transformers for applications including high-voltage transmission, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, power generation projects, AI data centres and large industrial facilities.
Managing Director and CEO N Venu said the investment reflects the company’s long-term confidence in India’s energy sector while expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities and supporting employment. Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers business, said the facility would strengthen the company’s ability to meet customer demand in one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets.
The company said the project is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. The factory is also planned as a LEED-certified digital manufacturing site incorporating advanced production technologies, with a focus on energy efficiency, sustainability and data-driven operations.
The investment forms part of Hitachi Energy’s broader global manufacturing expansion programme aimed at increasing capacity for critical power infrastructure as electricity demand continues to grow worldwide.
