Mumbai, October 5, 2026: Tata Steel has developed a hot-rolled E350 structural steel designed to retain strength during prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The material has received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under IS 15103, the Indian standard for fire-resistant structural steel.

The newly developed steel can retain two-thirds of its room-temperature yield strength at 600°C for up to three hours, according to Tata Steel. The company said the property is intended to help structural components remain stable for longer during a fire, potentially providing additional time for building occupants to evacuate.

The steel’s performance at elevated temperatures comes from its alloy design, which uses an optimised combination of microalloying elements and controlled microstructural engineering. These features are intended to improve the retention of strength when the material is subjected to high temperatures.

Tata Steel said the grade can be used in a range of structural applications, including structural hollow tubes and sections used in pre-engineered buildings. The company has positioned the material for applications where maintaining structural performance during a fire is an important consideration.

Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, New Material Business, and Graphene at Tata Steel, said the development reflects the role of materials engineering in addressing fire-safety requirements in modern infrastructure. He added that the BIS certification establishes the material’s compliance with the applicable Indian standard for fire-resistant structural steel.

The certification under IS 15103 marks the formal recognition of the steel’s fire-resistant performance under the relevant Indian standard. Tata Steel said the product is intended for use in buildings and engineering structures where improved resistance to elevated temperatures is required.

The development comes as fire performance becomes an increasingly important consideration in structural design, particularly for components expected to maintain their load-bearing capability during high-temperature conditions.
