Air India and Drukair, Bhutan’s national airline, have entered into an interline agreement designed to improve air connectivity between India and Bhutan while opening more international travel options for passengers of both carriers.
Under the agreement announced on August 26, travellers can combine flights operated by the two airlines under a single ticket. The arrangement also covers baggage coordination and passenger transfers to the final destination, with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport serving as the main connecting hub. Interline fares will also be available for eligible journeys.
For Air India passengers, the agreement provides connections to Bhutan’s Paro airport through Delhi from destinations across the airline’s international network. Travellers arriving in Paro can then connect to Drukair services serving Bumthang, Gelephu and Yonphula.
The arrangement also expands access for Drukair passengers travelling through India. Connections via Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata will link them with Air India’s domestic network, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kochi.
Passengers travelling onward internationally will also have access to several destinations served by Air India, including Paris Charles de Gaulle, Colombo, Newark, Frankfurt, New York’s JFK Airport, London Heathrow, Melbourne, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto Pearson and Vancouver.
Air India Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal said the agreement strengthens the airline’s connectivity across the SAARC region and provides passengers with easier access to Bhutan. Drukair Chief Executive Officer Tandi Wangchuk said the partnership would expand the airline’s access to international markets through India.
The two airlines said the agreement is also expected to support tourism and business travel by improving connections between Bhutan, India and destinations beyond the region
