Thimphu/Ahmedabad, October 6, 2026: Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed a shareholders’ agreement to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydropower project in central Bhutan, with construction expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

The project will be located on the Chamkarchhu River in Zhemgang district and is planned as a peaking run-of-river facility. Under the agreement, Adani Power will hold a 49% stake, while DGPC will own the remaining 51%. The project will follow a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) structure, with a 30-year concession period beginning from its commercial operation date.

The partners are targeting commissioning within six years of the start of construction. Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay attended the signing ceremony, which was also attended by representatives of the country’s energy and finance ministries, state-owned entities and the two companies.

Chamkharchhu-I is the second major hydropower project agreed upon by Adani Power and DGPC. In September 2025, the companies signed an agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu hydropower project. Both developments fall under a broader memorandum of understanding signed in May 2025 to jointly pursue 5,000 MW of hydropower development in Bhutan.

The new facility is expected to help Bhutan meet periods of high electricity demand, particularly during winter. The partners also expect surplus power generated during summer to be available for export to India, supporting cross-border electricity trade.

Anil Sardana, managing director of Adani Power, said the project would contribute to energy security and regional cooperation. DGPC managing director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the partnership would support Bhutan’s hydropower development and improve the use of surplus clean electricity.

The two companies are continuing to assess further hydropower opportunities under the wider 5,000 MW programme.
