India Approves First Semiconductor SEZ for Tata’s Chip Plant
Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd can now establish a manufacturing unit in Dholera, Gujarat, thanks to the Indian government’s approval of the nation’s first semiconductor-focused Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Nearly 21,000 jobs are anticipated to be created by the project, which would cost about ₹91,000 crore.
The SEZ, which is 66.16 hectares in size, has been designated to support IT/ITeS operations, software, and electronic gear. The action comes after SEZ regulations were changed in June 2025, lowering the minimum land need for semiconductor projects and facilitating the attraction of significant investments.
The government has authorized four further SEZ plans pertaining to semiconductors in addition to Tata’s manufacturing facility. These initiatives, which concentrate on chip assembly, testing, and packaging, are carried out by Micron Semiconductor Technology India Ltd., Kaynes Semicon Ltd., and CG Semi Ltd.
The program is part of a global effort to protect semiconductor supply chains, which is fueled by growing demand from the electronics, automotive, data center, and artificial intelligence industries. India wants to establish itself as a competitive global center for semiconductor manufacture through infrastructure development and policy assistance.
