India Must Build Strong Supply Chains for Clean Energy: Kumaraswamy

New Delhi, India: Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has urged India to build resilient supply chains and expand domestic manufacturing to emerge as a global producer of clean energy technologies. Addressing the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition in New Delhi, the Minister said energy security in today’s world is increasingly determined by a nation’s ability to manufacture, innovate and develop reliable industrial ecosystems.

Delivering the keynote address during the special plenary session on “Energy Security & Supply Chains,” Kumaraswamy said recent geopolitical developments, supply chain disruptions and growing competition for critical minerals have reshaped global industrial priorities. He noted that India is responding to these changes through the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, while remaining integrated with trusted global value chains.

The Minister said India’s transition to clean energy must be supported by strong domestic manufacturing across sectors such as steel, heavy engineering, batteries, transformers, power equipment, electric mobility, construction equipment and advanced technologies. According to him, the country should position itself as one of the world’s leading producers of equipment and materials required for the global energy transition.

Highlighting the role of the steel industry, Kumaraswamy said steel remains fundamental to renewable energy infrastructure, including solar parks, wind turbines, transmission networks, battery manufacturing facilities, ports and green hydrogen projects. He reiterated India’s target of achieving 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030, while emphasising that future growth should be driven by sustainable production and environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The Minister also outlined several government initiatives aimed at strengthening industrial competitiveness. These include the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore, to support the electric mobility ecosystem, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Batteries, under which ₹18,100 crore has been committed to establish 50 GWh of domestic battery manufacturing capacity.

He further referred to the government’s ₹7,200 crore programme for promoting the manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets, describing it as an important step towards securing domestic supply chains for sectors including automotive, defence, renewable energy and aerospace.

Calling for closer collaboration between government, industry, academia and research institutions, Kumaraswamy said resilient supply chains can be built only through coordinated efforts that strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem, generate employment and support long-term economic growth.
