State-owned miner NMDC has reviewed a series of digitalisation, capacity expansion and sustainable mining initiatives at its Donimalai Complex in Karnataka as part of its broader strategy to achieve an annual production capacity of 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
NMDC Pushes Digitalisation and Sustainable Mining at Donimalai
NMDC’s senior management recently visited the Donimalai Complex in Karnataka to assess progress on key operational, infrastructure and sustainability initiatives aimed at strengthening production capabilities while advancing responsible mining practices.
The review focused on ongoing capacity enhancement projects designed to increase output from the Kumaraswamy Mine and the Donimalai Complex. These developments form an important component of NMDC’s long-term objective of becoming a 100 MTPA mining company.
During the visit, officials evaluated initiatives intended to improve resource utilisation, including efforts to process iron ore with up to 35% iron content. The company is exploring the use of low-grade iron-bearing materials such as Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) and Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ). These measures are expected to support improved resource efficiency while reducing waste generation and promoting sustainable mining operations.
The management team also reviewed environmental measures focused on water conservation and sustainable resource management. Among the initiatives assessed was a project that treats and recycles mine process water for industrial use, helping reduce dependence on freshwater sources while supporting operational requirements.
Another area of focus was the deployment of digital technologies across mining operations. NMDC examined a recently implemented material movement monitoring system that enables real-time tracking and verification of ore dispatches. The digital platform is designed to improve transparency, strengthen operational oversight and reduce manual intervention throughout the logistics chain.
As part of the visit, NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee, along with Functional Directors, inaugurated newly developed infrastructure facilities, including high-rise towers. The team also reviewed welfare and community development initiatives aimed at improving employee living standards and supporting local communities around the mining complex.
According to NMDC, the company remains focused on increasing production, improving operational efficiency and maximizing the value of available mineral resources through technology-driven mining practices. The Donimalai initiatives align with the miner’s broader strategy of balancing growth ambitions with environmental stewardship and sustainable resource utilisation.
