TRAI Q1 2026 Report Shows Growth as Internet Users Cross 1.09 billion

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its “Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report” for the quarter ending March 31, 2026, highlighting steady growth across telecom, broadcasting, and digital services.

With a quarterly growth rate of 6.24%, India’s overall internet user base increased dramatically from 1,028.61 million in December 2025 to 1,092.79 million in March 2026. With 1,065.88 million customers, broadband accounted for the majority, while wireless internet remained the most popular with over 1,046 million users. With 48.25 million users, wireline connections also saw growth.

With Gross Revenue (GR) increasing to ₹1,05,118 crore and Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) reaching ₹86,716 crore during the quarter, the telecom industry showed impressive financial performance. With consistent consumption trends, the average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services rose to ₹196.04.

India’s tele-density increased to 93.26%, while the country’s total telephone users increased to 1,330.58 million. While the rural proportion marginally decreased, both urban and rural divisions saw growth. The number of wireless subscribers has surpassed 1,282 million.

In broadcasting, India had 917 permitted satellite TV channels, including 342 pay channels. The number of Direct-to-Home (DTH) subscribers was 49.05 million, indicating a little decrease. In the meantime, private FM radio reached 390 active channels in 120 cities, earning ₹414.03 crore from advertising.

India’s continuous digital growth, enhanced connectivity, and changing media landscape, all fuelled by rising data consumption and infrastructure development and are all reflected in the report.
