The United States plans to unveil a new global technology initiative, the Technology Prosperity Corps, at the India AI Impact Summit, aimed at strengthening adoption of American artificial intelligence technologies and reducing reliance on Chinese alternatives.
The programme, backed by the administration of Donald Trump, will be announced by Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. It will operate as a modern extension of the Peace Corps, deploying up to 5,000 US science, technology and mathematics graduates to partner countries over the next five years.
The program aims to move developing countries away from Chinese technology and toward US hardware, software, and cloud ecosystems while assisting them in implementing AI for public services. It supports Washington’s larger initiative to increase exports of cutting-edge AI systems, including chips made by companies like NVIDIA.
It is anticipated that recruitment will start this year, with an initial group of about 500 volunteers. Funding will come from a combination of corporate and philanthropic donations as well as US government assistance.
According to officials, the program will increase the Global South’s technical competition with China by extending the Peace Corps’ conventional development mandate into the establishment of digital and AI competence.
