New Delhi, India: India’s first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior has secured cumulative investment commitments worth ₹5,500 crore after attracting fresh proposals valued at ₹2,000 crore during an investors’ meeting in Mumbai, strengthening the government’s push to establish a dedicated telecom manufacturing ecosystem.
Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, co-chaired the second Investors’ Meet in Mumbai for the Telecom Manufacturing Zone. The event brought together nearly 18 leading industry players from across the telecom sector, with the latest commitments expected to generate around 4,000 new employment opportunities.
With the new investments, the proposed manufacturing zone has now accumulated ₹5,500 crore in investment commitments and is projected to create more than 18,000 jobs. The latest announcements build on the ₹3,500 crore investments and 14,000 employment opportunities secured during the inaugural investors’ roundtable held in New Delhi last week. The government aims to attract investments exceeding ₹10,000 crore into the project.
Addressing industry representatives, Scindia said India has undergone significant transformation in telecommunications and digital infrastructure over the past decade and is now working towards becoming a global manufacturing hub for telecom products. He stressed the importance of increasing domestic value addition, creating intellectual property within India and expanding the global reach of Indian-designed telecom technologies.
The minister said the Telecom Manufacturing Zone is envisioned as a dedicated manufacturing ecosystem covering the entire telecom value chain, including design, research and development, testing, components, semiconductors, optical fibre, telecom equipment and related industries. The project will also feature shared plug-and-play infrastructure and testing facilities to support manufacturers.
Highlighting Gwalior’s advantages, Scindia pointed to its central location, industrial ecosystem, improving connectivity, skilled workforce and competitive operating costs as key factors supporting investment. He also noted that infrastructure projects, including the high-speed Agra-Gwalior Greenfield Expressway, are expected to significantly improve regional connectivity.
The minister said a Special Purpose Vehicle comprising representatives from the Department of Telecommunications and the Madhya Pradesh government will oversee implementation of the project, while both governments will continue working together to facilitate investments and ensure the long-term success of the Telecom Manufacturing Zone.
