Mumbai, August 17, 2026: Tata Power and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have entered into a long-term research partnership aimed at moving laboratory-developed innovations in clean energy and advanced power technologies toward commercial deployment.
The two institutions signed a Master Research Agreement (MRA) at the IIT Bombay campus. The agreement was signed by Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Dr. Praveer Sinha and IIT Bombay Dean (Research & Development) Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, in the presence of institute Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare.
The partnership will cover research and technology development in areas including smart grids, power electronics, energy storage and electric mobility. Cybersecurity, artificial intelligence for power systems, digital grid technologies, carbon capture and the circular economy are also part of the collaboration.
The initiative is intended to help bridge the gap between laboratory research and technologies that can be deployed at scale. According to the two organisations, combining IIT Bombay’s research capabilities with Tata Power’s experience in implementing energy technologies could support the development of solutions relevant to India’s changing power sector.
Sinha said the partnership would bring together IIT Bombay’s research work and Tata Power’s deployment experience to develop technologies for the next generation of India’s power sector.
Kedare said the country’s energy transition requires scientific advances to be converted into reliable and scalable technologies. He said the collaboration is expected to support the development of indigenous technologies while contributing to energy security, decarbonisation and a resilient power grid.
The agreement comes amid a broader push for closer industry-academia collaboration in research, innovation and technology commercialisation. The partnership specifically focuses on technologies considered important to India’s clean energy transition and future power infrastructure.
Tata Power said its total operational and under-construction capacity exceeds 26 GW, including about 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity and around 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity.
