According to Sarbananda Sonowal, the government’s efforts to create a more diverse and future-ready maritime workforce have resulted in a 340% increase in women’s engagement in India’s marine sector since 2020.
Speaking at the 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue in New Delhi, Sonowal stated that programs like “Sagar Mein Samman” are assisting in advancing women’s equality of opportunity, leadership, and dignity in the marine industry.
He emphasized that India’s larger marine agenda, which emphasizes labor diversity, economic growth, and social empowerment, is in line with the increase in women’s engagement. Policymakers, business executives, and specialists from the Indian Ocean region came together to talk about marine security, sustainability, collaboration in the blue economy, and regional connectivity.
Sonowal stated that in addition to the development of infrastructure and connectivity, the “people factor” is still essential to India’s marine policy. In order to promote inclusive development and regional collaboration, he continued, India’s marine endeavors are in line with important frameworks like MAHASAGAR and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
Established in 2014 by the Indian Ocean Rim Association, the Indian Ocean Dialogue remains a significant forum for conversations about economic cooperation and sustainable marine development.
