Indian engineering major Larsen & Toubro has announced a strategic partnership with US chipmaker NVIDIA to develop sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure in India, marking a major step toward the country’s ambition of becoming a global AI hub.

Unveiled on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, the proposed venture aligns with the India AI Mission and aims to build a gigawatt-scale AI factory powered by NVIDIA platforms. The initiative is expected to provide production-grade AI capacity for Indian enterprises, policymakers, and global customers.

L&T claims that the partnership will integrate NVIDIA’s GPUs, CPUs, networking, accelerated storage, and AI enterprise applications with its engineering and data center execution skills. Enabling safe, scalable, and independent AI workloads that can be developed and implemented in India while maintaining interoperability with international ecosystems is the major goal.

The project would assist Indian businesses in transitioning from pilot projects to extensive AI deployment in industries like manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and finance, according to L&T Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan.

In keeping with Narendra Modi’s objectives, NVIDIA Founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the collaboration advances India’s ambition of democratizing AI and establishing the nation as a key hub for digital infrastructure.
