Seco Tools has introduced TP3502, a new CVD-coated Duratomic turning grade designed for ISO P steel machining, particularly applications involving interrupted cuts, varying material hardness and complex component geometries.

Announced from Fagersta on September 29, 2026, the TP3502 belongs to the ISO P35 range and is intended for general steel-turning operations. Seco said the grade combines wear resistance with toughness, with an updated coating and edge preparation developed to produce a more controlled wear pattern and consistent tool life.

The new grade is aimed at machining conditions where cutting can vary across a component. Its application range covers low- and high-alloy steels, along with selected stainless steels, ductile irons and powder-metal components. These operations can involve interrupted machining and changing levels of engagement, requiring the cutting insert to withstand fluctuations while maintaining predictable performance.

According to Seco, the updated design is intended to support higher cutting speeds while maintaining process stability and consistent component quality. Mikael Lindholm, Global Product Manager for General ISO Turning at Seco, said the development focuses on improving reliability in routine steel-turning operations and allowing manufacturers to adjust cutting data with greater confidence.

TP3502 also incorporates features intended to improve insert tracking and material use. A chrome-based used-edge detection feature allows operators to identify cutting edges that have already been used. The insert carries a Data Matrix Code for traceability and digital tracking.

The grade has also been produced using recycled powders and is included in Seco’s buy-back recycling programme. The company said these measures are intended to reduce waste and support sustainability reporting alongside the machining application.

The launch adds another grade to Seco’s Duratomic portfolio, with TP3502 positioned for steel-turning applications where both tool durability and predictable performance are required under mixed machining conditions.
