The United States and India have achieved a historic technical agreement to co-produce cutting-edge jet engines in India, which is the first time the two countries have transferred vital military technology. Nearly 80% of the manufacturing technology and intellectual property for the F-414 engine, which General Electric created, will be transferred domestically as part of the agreement.

A definitive deal is anticipated later this year. The agreement between General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) covers important technical features. The planned Tejas Mark-2 fighter jet, an improved version of the present Tejas Mark-1A, which is powered by the less potent F-404 engine, will be powered by the F-414 engine.

The partnership, which was first announced in 2023, is a reflection of the two nations’ growing defense cooperation. The action is anticipated to help the Indian Air Force, which presently lacks fighter squadrons, and bolster India’s domestic aerospace production capabilities.

Additionally, the agreement strengthens strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific area by building on previous frameworks like the Industrial Security Agreement (2019) and later standards for exchanging sensitive defense information.
