India has vehemently denied accusations made under the Office of the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) Section 301 investigations, demanding that the investigations end immediately and promoting a bilateral settlement.
India refuted allegations of unfair trade practices and surplus industrial capacity in its submission, claiming that no particular evidence or policy that breaches US trade rules was found during the examination. The government said that the notice does not clearly demonstrate discrimination or a restriction on US commerce, instead relying on general macroeconomic factors.
India further stated that the investigation does not satisfy the legal requirements outlined in the Trade Act of 1974 and requested that the USTR render a negative ruling. Additionally, it reaffirmed its readiness to continue talks on a bilateral trade agreement with the United States.
Separately, India rejected claims of forced labor practices, claiming the inquiry had no merit and no legal foundation.
In order to evaluate possible unfair trade practices affecting American business, the USTR had started investigations against a number of economies, including China, Japan, and the European Union.
