Hitachi Energy and Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) have entered into a collaboration aimed at accelerating the adoption of zero-emission construction sites by combining electric machinery, clean power infrastructure and energy management solutions.
Hitachi Energy and Volvo Construction Equipment have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore integrated solutions that support the transition toward emission-free construction and manufacturing operations.
Announced on May 26, the partnership brings together Volvo CE’s expertise in electric construction equipment and Hitachi Energy’s capabilities in electrification, power systems and energy management. The companies will focus on developing system-level approaches that enable construction sites to operate with lower emissions while maintaining productivity and operational efficiency.
The collaboration comes as the construction sector faces increasing pressure from customers, investors and regulators to reduce carbon emissions. Industry stakeholders are seeking practical solutions that go beyond standalone technologies, requiring coordinated systems that connect equipment, charging infrastructure, power supply and energy management platforms.
Under the agreement, the two companies will assess technical and commercial concepts that could support large-scale deployment of zero-emission construction sites. Areas of cooperation include power supply systems, charging solutions, energy management, operational integration, business models and go-to-market strategies. Joint teams from both organizations will also examine support and aftermarket requirements for future deployments.
Volvo CE President Melker Jernberg said strategic partnerships are essential for speeding up the transition to zero-emission construction, noting that integrated solutions can provide customers with greater confidence when adopting new technologies. Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration CEO Niklas Persson emphasized that successful decarbonization of construction activities will depend on effective system integration and collaboration across the industry.
Initially, the partnership will focus on practical, ready-to-deploy solutions designed to simplify the shift to electric construction operations. Over time, the companies may explore additional capabilities such as connected machinery, digital integration and expanded service offerings.
The agreement marks another step in the construction industry’s broader move toward electrification, with both companies aiming to create a more comprehensive framework for deploying zero-emission construction sites at scale.
