With the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, which will be the highest motorable tunnel in the world at 15,800 feet, India is undertaking a significant high-altitude infrastructure project.

The ₹1,681 crore project, which is being developed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) under Project Yojak, started in July 2024 and is expected to be finished by August 2028. Through the Nimu-Padam-Darcha route, the 4.1-kilometer twin-tube tunnel would link the Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh with the Zanskar Valley in Ladakh, providing all-weather connection in an area that is frequently shut off during the winter.

The tunnel will have cross-passages every 500 meters for emergency access and safety due to its harsh terrain design. Its construction at such a great altitude poses special engineering obstacles, such as severe weather and low oxygen levels.

In addition to enhancing civilian mobility, the project is strategically significant since it speeds up the movement of defense troops and equipment close to the Chinese border.

The tunnel is anticipated to boost economic activity, improve regional connections, and bolster India’s infrastructural footprint in critical border regions once it is operational.
