In order for India’s technology sector to stay globally competitive in the era of artificial intelligence, millions of people must be quickly retrained, according to IBM India President Sandip Patel. Patel told Reuters that India has a significant edge in developing one of the biggest AI-ready workforces in the world due to its youthful population.

He pointed out that over half of India’s 1.4 billion people are under 30, which provides a solid basis for the growth of AI potential. However, Patel cautioned that as automation transforms traditional IT professions, extensive training in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and data analytics will be crucial.

Only about 30% of India’s technological workforce now has AI skills that are ready for the sector, according to Patel. He stated that in order to close this gap, cooperation between the government, business, and academic institutions will be essential.

Through collaborations with educational and training institutions, IBM has pledged to train five million Indians in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing by 2030.

In order to promote AI innovation and international investment in India’s technological ecosystem, Patel also emphasized the necessity of more robust intellectual property safeguards.
