India showcased its coal gasification roadmap at a BRICS side event on clean coal technologies, emphasizing the role of the technology in strengthening energy security, reducing import dependence and supporting industrial growth.
The Ministry of Coal convened a BRICS side event focused on clean coal technologies and coal gasification, bringing together government representatives, public sector enterprises, technology providers and delegates from BRICS partner nations including Russia, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
Addressing the gathering, Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, outlined the government’s strategy to expand coal gasification as part of India’s broader energy and industrial development plans. He noted that gasification technology enables the conversion of coal into synthesis gas, which can be further processed into products such as ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, synthetic fuels and direct reduced iron (DRI).
Jha reiterated India’s target of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030 through policy measures, financial support mechanisms, industry partnerships and coordinated efforts across government departments. He also highlighted ongoing coal gasification projects and stressed the importance of collaboration among BRICS nations in advancing related technologies.
The event featured presentations from several public sector companies and institutions. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) discussed its coal gasification initiatives, while Jindal Steel Limited (JSL) and DVC Energy shared updates on their respective projects and the technology’s potential for wider adoption. Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) presented developments related to the Kasta Underground Coal Gasification pilot project, and the Nominated Authority outlined policy initiatives and coal block allocation measures supporting underground coal gasification efforts.
Coal India Limited (CIL) also detailed steps taken to facilitate coal gasification projects, including coal linkage provisions and ongoing implementation initiatives.
A panel discussion explored technological advancements, project economics, geological considerations, processing challenges and the utilisation of high-ash Indian coal. Participants also examined policy frameworks and financial support mechanisms needed to accelerate deployment of coal gasification technologies.
According to the Ministry, the event served as a platform for knowledge exchange among BRICS countries and industry stakeholders while highlighting coal gasification’s potential contribution to energy security, industrial development and cleaner utilisation of coal resources.
