Rolls-Royce Proposes Co-Development of Next-Gen Fighter Jet Engine with Full IP Transfer to India

New Delhi: UK-based aerospace major Rolls-Royce has unveiled a strategic roadmap to significantly expand its footprint in India, including an offer to co-develop a next-generation 120 kN class fighter jet engine with full intellectual property (IP) ownership for India. The proposal is aimed at powering combat aircraft under India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

CEO Tufan Erginbilgic outlined plans to more than double the company’s India workforce to around 10,000 and increase local supply chain sourcing tenfold, positioning India as a global hub for high-tech manufacturing. The offer includes complete technology transfer, a dedicated design centre, and expanded manufacturing capabilities to support indigenous propulsion development under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Erginbilgic met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal during his visit.

Currently, over 1,400 Rolls-Royce engines power Indian defence platforms, and more than 4,000 professionals support its India operations. The expansion aligns with the broader India-UK Vision 2035 framework for enhanced industrial and defence collaboration.
