Reliance Exports Jet Fuel to Europe After EU Ban on Russian Oil-Derived Products

Reliance Industries has delivered its first jet fuel shipment to Europe since the European Union’s ban on products derived from Russian crude came into effect on January 21, according to ship-tracking data and trade sources. The Indian refiner partially offloaded a cargo in Italy, marking a closely watched test of post-ban energy trade flows.

An Aframax tanker, Liwa-V, chartered by Reliance, discharged around 390,000 barrels of jet fuel—about half its cargo—at the Fiumicino port near Rome between February 1 and February 4, data from Kpler and Vortexa showed. The vessel had arrived in early January but remained offshore for nearly three weeks, reportedly due to adverse weather conditions.

Reliance operates two refineries at its Jamnagar complex and said in November that it stopped processing Russian crude at its export-oriented facility. The company told Reuters it provides written assurances to European buyers that fuels exported to the region are produced without Russian crude.

India, a major buyer of discounted Russian oil, exported 4.1 million metric tons of jet fuel to Europe last year—nearly three times the volume shipped in 2021. However, shipping data indicate limited Indian fuel movements to Europe since the ban, with no diesel imports recorded so far.
