Maruti Suzuki India has crossed a cumulative 1 lakh exports of three India-made models—the Jimny 5-door, FRONX and e VITARA—to Japan, marking a significant milestone in the company’s overseas sales. Japan was Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume in FY 2025-26 and retained that position during April-August of FY 2026-27.
The three models entered the Japanese market at different stages. Exports of the FRONX began in August 2024, followed by the Jimny 5-door in December 2024. The e VITARA, Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle, joined the export portfolio in September 2025. The Jimny 5-door and e VITARA are manufactured exclusively in India.
The latest milestone comes as Suzuki vehicles manufactured in India have gained a larger presence in Japan. According to Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki Motor Corporation became Japan’s largest vehicle importer in FY 2025-26, based on data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association. Vehicles manufactured by Maruti Suzuki accounted for nearly all of Suzuki’s vehicle imports into Japan during that financial year.
Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the export milestone highlights the acceptance of India-made vehicles in one of the world’s highly competitive automobile markets. He also linked the development to the longer-term evolution of the India-Japan automotive relationship.
The company currently exports vehicles to nearly 120 countries. It shipped more than 1.8 lakh units between April and August of FY 2026-27 and has remained India’s largest passenger-vehicle exporter from FY 2021-22 through FY 2025-26, according to data cited by the company from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
The Japan milestone adds to Maruti Suzuki’s broader export activity, with the FRONX, Jimny 5-door and e VITARA forming part of its growing range of India-manufactured vehicles supplied to international markets.
