Maruti Suzuki India has commissioned its first green hydrogen production and utilisation plant at its manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana, marking the company’s entry into hydrogen-based energy use at its manufacturing operations.
The plant, commissioned on September 25, 2026, has been set up as part of Maruti Suzuki’s efforts to reduce fossil-fuel consumption and emissions from its production activities. The facility includes a 1 MW electrolyser and is designed to produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity.
According to the company, the hydrogen generated at the plant will be used within the Manesar manufacturing facility. The project also includes systems for hydrogen storage and distribution, along with equipment to support its use in industrial processes.
Maruti Suzuki said the plant will be operated as a pilot project to assess the potential of green hydrogen for manufacturing applications. The company will monitor its performance and evaluate the technology’s suitability for wider use across its operations.
The project has been developed with support from the Ministry of Heavy Industries under the government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) framework, according to the company.
Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the project represents a step towards exploring alternative energy sources for manufacturing. He added that the company would continue evaluating technologies that can reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
The Manesar facility is one of Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing locations in India. The company has been working on reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy and improving resource efficiency across its operations.
Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable sources. Unlike hydrogen produced using fossil fuels, its production does not directly involve carbon emissions when renewable electricity is used.
Maruti Suzuki said the Manesar project will provide operational experience in producing, storing and using green hydrogen and help determine its potential role in the company’s future manufacturing activities.
