India Unveils 2035 Climate Roadmap, Targets Stronger Shift to Green Economy

India has released its revised climate targets under the Paris Agreement, detailing its 2031–2035 plan with a greater emphasis on sustainability and clean energy.

Reducing emissions intensity by 47%, guaranteeing that 60% of power capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources, and establishing a carbon sink of 3.5–4 billion tons of CO2 through afforestation are the three main objectives of the updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

These goals demonstrate a steady rise in climate ambition and expand upon India’s 2030 pledges. Interestingly, India has already surpassed its previous target of 50% non-fossil fuel capacity by 2025.

According to experts, the roadmap reinforces the nation’s shift to a green economy by indicating a move toward combining economic growth with climate action. Some observers, however, consider the goals to be conservative, pointing out that the current momentum in clean energy could lead to quicker advancements.

The revised vision, which positions India as a crucial role in promoting sustainable development while juggling growth aspirations, comes amid international uncertainty over climate obligations.
