Google Gemini may allow chat history import, making it easier for users to switch AI assistants.

According to reports, Google is exploring a new feature for its Gemini AI that would let users import chat histories from other platforms. This might greatly ease the transition between AI assistants. The “Import AI conversations” capability, which was discovered during beta testing, attempts to solve chatbot lock-in, one of the main issues facing the AI industry.

Up until now, consumers who spent time teaching an AI assistant to comprehend their processes, preferences, or tone frequently had to start over when switching platforms. Gemini may make it possible for users to carry on with projects without difficulty by allowing conversation history portability, which would give the AI quick context from previous exchanges.

The action seems to be a calculated attempt to draw in users of rival programs like Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT from OpenAI. Google is wagering that Gemini’s integration with Workspace products like Gmail, Docs, and Drive will help retain customers after migration by reducing switching costs.

Additionally, the beta leak points to improvements to Gemini’s creative capabilities, such as improved identity-related security measures and higher-resolution image downloads. However, sources point out that imported conversations may be stored in Gemini Activity and possibly used to train future models, which raises privacy concerns in addition to convenience.
