L&T Semiconductor Technologies Limited (LTSCT) and Tata Electronics have entered a partnership to expand the domestic manufacturing of India-designed semiconductor products, with the companies targeting applications across automotive, industrial, communications, security and intelligent-edge sectors.
Announced in Mumbai on September 18, the collaboration will combine LTSCT’s fabless semiconductor design capabilities with Tata Electronics’ foundry, packaging and manufacturing expertise. The two companies will explore fabrication and packaging opportunities for LTSCT’s existing and future chip products using Tata Electronics’ available process technologies and packaging solutions.
The companies will also work on optimising chip designs for manufacturing, with the aim of improving the efficiency of production at scale. The partnership is intended to connect semiconductor design and manufacturing more closely within India, while supporting products intended for global markets.
LTSCT Chief Executive Dr. Sandeep Kumar said the collaboration would help strengthen the industrialisation of semiconductor designs in India. He described the ability to take domestically designed products through manufacturing and packaging as an important part of building capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.
Tata Electronics CEO and Managing Director Dr. Randhir Thakur said the partnership combines LTSCT’s design and engineering expertise with Tata Electronics’ manufacturing, packaging and testing capabilities.
LTSCT, a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, is a fabless semiconductor company developing products across power, compute, analog and mixed-signal, IoT modules and radio-frequency technologies. Its portfolio is intended to serve automotive, industrial, energy, data-centre and telecommunications applications. The company operates across the US, Europe, Japan and India, with offices in Austin, Munich, Tokyo, Bengaluru and Noida.
Tata Electronics, established in 2020 as a greenfield Tata Group venture, has operations in Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, along with offices in the US, Taiwan and Singapore. Its capabilities include electronics manufacturing, semiconductor assembly and testing, foundry operations and design services.
The partnership forms part of the companies’ stated focus on developing domestic semiconductor manufacturing, packaging technologies and related quality systems in India.
