According to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., the Vizhinjam International Seaport became the fastest Indian port to reach the milestone when it surpassed 2 million TEUs in just 18 months of operation.
In May 2025, Narendra Modi formally dedicated the deep-water transshipment port to the country after it started trial operations in July 2024. In August 2025, the port had already surpassed one million TEU.
Over 950 boats, including 67 Ultra Large Container boats (ULCVs), have been handled by Vizhinjam since operations started. Some of the biggest container ships in the world, such as the MSC Irina and MSC Verona, have also called the port home.
Vizhinjam provides crucial connectivity between Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East and is only ten nautical miles from the major east-west international shipping route. Large ships may dock there without the need for significant dredging thanks to its natural 20-meter draft.
The port’s cargo handling capacity and export-import operations will be greatly enhanced by the Phase 2 development, which is already under way and is anticipated to be finished by 2028 with an investment of about ₹16,000 crore.
