India’s First Hydrogen Train Approved for Jind-Sonipat Route

The first hydrogen-powered 10-coach DEMU train in India will be operated by Indian Railways on the Jind-Sonipat segment of the Northern Railway zone. Following technical approval from the Research Designs and Standards Organization and safety testing by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the Railway Ministry approved the project.
Instead of using diesel or traditional electric traction, the hydrogen-powered train will use hydrogen fuel cells to create power and reach a top speed of 75 kmph. The train will employ Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) technology, which distributes power among several coaches, with a total power output of 1,200 kilowatts.
Northern Railway was instructed by the government to adhere to all operating, safety, and maintenance criteria, including those set forth by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization. Before commercial operations start, officials pointed out that a number of compliance tests are still due.
The train will be transported by a diesel locomotive when the hydrogen system is turned off, and repair facilities have been built at Shakurbasti in Delhi.
Additionally, railway authorities have ordered that employees who handle hydrogen refueling, and aboard systems have specialized training and certification.
